Mumbai local trains are Mumbai’s lifeline. Unfortunately the stations look dull, pathetic and diapaliated. In this context Mumbai First and Making A Difference, leading NGOs of Mumbai along with the Western and Central Railway authorities designed Railway Station Beautification project “Hamara Station Hamari Shaan” (Our Station, Our Pride). The project through citizen participation aims to beautify 36 Stations during the ‘Joy of Giving Week’ scheduled from Oct 2 to Oct 8, 2016.
As socially conscious University, NMIMS adopted Vile-Parle Station which lies within its immediate geography. The Jasani Centre of Social Entrepreneurship Management & Sustainability Management of NMIMS School of Business Managent and the Social Responsibility Forum of Students through crowd funding raised INR 3.61 Lakhs ( 0.36 Million) for the beautification project. More than 250 students have signed up to volunteer for the beautification drive. Each student will volunteer for 3-5 hours between 20:00 to 24:00 hours to paint the station.
The project which kicked off on Mahatma Gandhi’s Birthday on Oct 2, saw a huge response from the volunteers, passengers and local residents in carrying out beautification work from 10.00 a.m to 24 hours.
Across the city at various stations more than 5000 citizen volunteers turned have signed up to beautify the station. This project is the World’s most massive Public Private People Partnership initiative and which has truly unified Mumbai, creating a sense of ownership.
