The 3-day Business Analytics and Data Mining Championship 2018 jointly organized by NMIMS and SAS was held from 4-6 October 2018 at the NMIMS campus, Mumbai.
As leaders in the field of analytics training and education both institutions recognized the need to infuse a sense of competition to seek out the best amongst budding analysts.
IIM Calcutta’s Team Alphas and Royal Bank of Scotland’s Team_Chirag emerged as winners in student and working professional category respectively. They were awarded a trophy, a cash prize of Rs. Two lakhs and a sponsored trip to the United States of America.
Subsequently, Team abraca_data from NMIMS’s Mukesh Patel School of Technology Management & Engineering bagged first Runner-up prize in student category whereas Team Vivechna from Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance Company in working professional category. Second runner-up was team code_riders from NIT Hamirpur and team
ajay_kumar_0712 from Accenture in student and working professional category respectively. They second runners up were awarded a trophy and a cash prize of Rs. One lakh, the first runners up were awarded a trophy and a cash prize of Rs. One and a half lakh.
The competition comprised of three rounds – the first was conducted online, selected participants were then hosted in Mumbai and invited to participate in round 2, where they were given a case to solve within 24 hours. This round is really the heart of the event, as participants slog it out day and night to find convincing and meaningful answers to the given problem. 5 teams are selected from each category – students and working professionals, to compete for the third round – where they are expected to make a presentation. The jury comprised of twelve experts from the industry and academia.
Ten companies also participated in jobfair offering final placements & internships to 20+ participants.
The inaugural ceremony was graced by Dr. Rajan Saxena, Vice Chancellor – NMIMS and keynote speakers Dr. Catherine Truxillo, Director of Advanced Analytics Education, SAS and Mr. Manish Makhijani, Global PDC Director, Hindustan Unilever Limited.
Stalwarts and experienced professionals in the field of analytics from a range of industries including banking, finance, and technology participated in a panel discussion on ‘Data Science and its future’. The panel was moderated by Mr. Amul Desai, Director – NMIMS Centre of Excellence in Analytics/Data Sciences.
In only its second year, over 3000 participants from 525 colleges of 25 cities and professionals from leading companies like Mahindra and Mahindra, TCS, Idea, Franklin Templeton etc. have participated. Competing colleges included premier institutions like the IITs, IIMs and NITs, making it a truly national competition. This year’s event had Hindustan Unilever Limited as its associate sponsor and CEAT Ltd. as its category sponsor.
