Mumbai, 23 July, 2022: SVKM’s NMIMS organized its 16th Book Talk on “The Maverick Effect: The Inside Story of India’s IT Revolution” with Mr Harish Mehta- Author, Convener of the Chairman Council, NASSCOM, Founder and Chairperson of Onward Group and the First President and Active Member of Tie Mumbai, on 23rd July, 2022
An Alumnus of Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute, New York University, USA, Mr Harish Mehta, penned the book to inject scientific mindset in India and encourage innovation-driven entrepreneurship. ‘The Maverick Effect’ documents his journey and life lesson in the budding of NASSCOM and subsequent revolutionalisation of the Indian IT industry. Being an IT industry expert, Mr Mehta is relentlessly pursuing his vision to make India a technologically smart nation and believes that the innovation driven entrepreneurs will act as an agent for the upliftment of the society.
Mr Mehta holds a Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering from the College of Engineering, Pune and Masters in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute, New York University, USA. Launched recently, the Maverick Effect has already acclaimed the status of ‘Best Seller’ and earned praise from across the spectrum.
A discussion jointly moderated by Dr Anuja Agarwal, Professor & Associate Dean – Technology Management & Digital Transformation, NMIMS MPSTME, Mumbai, and Ms Antra Shankar, Student, MBA Tech (IT) Batch 2023, NMIMS MPSTME, Mumbai, delved into the achievement of Mr Mehta as an IT doyen and his vision which led India to make India an IT superpower. This book solves a lot of quizzes about the government policies and also gives insights of the IT industry.
“The importance of failure and success to be celebrated alike, was one very big learning for me from the book. One of the key messages the book has given to us is – do not brush out problems under the carpet, bring out and face them, and let them carve the next day ahead,” said Dr Anuja Agarwal.

Stressing upon challenges faced while bringing out this book, Mr Harish Mehta recalled the era of 1970s when he came back to India after graduating from the Institute, New York University, USA when an electrical engineer had the only opportunity to get a job at a monthly salary of Rs 400 per month. “Since then India has changed a lot and this change has been due to the change in IT industry which has been possible due to NASSCOM.”
During the course of the discussion, Mr Harish Mehta, said that while reading a lot of books written by IT experts, bureaucrats or politicians, I sensed an opportunity to bring out the facts about the changes that took place in India. Mr Harish Mehta recited an African proverb which says, “If lions had historians, the tails of glory of hunting would be very different.”
About the book
“How do you put the 35 years history of the Indian IT industry?” This is a straightforward question which the book explains while bringing in 35 years of history of the Indian IT industry. The book might be intriguing and contain a lot of mysteries which may find thousands of critics. But, how the claim would be brought on the ground without putting out all those thoughts together is what changed India.
A stereotype India in those days was difficult to convert into a technology powerhouse as it is today. There were many ups and downs in India’s technology evolution but, after repeated failures, India achieved the success in this transmission, of course with the help of NASSCOM.
