Dr. Sachin Bhagwat, Chief Scientific Officer, Drug Discovery Research Centre,  Wokhardt graced the Convocation 2024 for of School of Pharmacy & Technology Management and School of Agricultural Sciences and Technology at  SVKM’s NMIMS, Mukesh Patel Technology Park, Shirpur Campus, as Chief Guest on 31st August 2024.

A pioneer in the field of antibiotic research, Dr. Bhagwat shared his 30-year journey in the pharmaceutical industry and offered a rare glimpse into the challenges, triumphs, and lessons learned throughout his distinguished career.

Dr. Bhagwat began his speech by reflecting on his early career, which started over 30 years ago. He spoke candidly about the obstacles he faced as a young scientist, particularly in the field of antibiotic research – a field that, at the time, was fraught with uncertainty and scepticism. Despite these challenges, Dr. Bhagwat and his team remained steadfast in their commitment to making a significant impact in the world of medicine.

One of the most poignant moments in Dr. Bhagwat’s speech was his discussion of the pivotal period in the 1990s when India signed the TRIPS agreement, a move that fundamentally changed the landscape of pharmaceutical research in the country. Dr. Bhagwat described how this forced the Indian pharmaceutical industry to shift from simply replicating existing drugs to innovating new ones, a challenge that his team embraced wholeheartedly.

Dr. Bhagwat’s team made history by entering the antibiotic field at a time when most major pharmaceutical companies were exiting due to the immense challenges and limited success in discovering new antibiotics. He described the painstaking process of building a research team from the ground up, often recruiting talent from small towns and training them to become world-class scientists.

A key theme of Dr. Bhagwat’s speech was the importance of embracing failure as part of the innovation process. He emphasized that in scientific research, failures are inevitable but necessary steps toward success. This mindset has been integral to his team’s approach, allowing them to push the boundaries of what is possible in antibiotic research.

Dr. Bhagwat’s dedication to antibiotic research has paid off in extraordinary ways. Today, his team is recognized as one of the largest and most successful antibiotic discovery teams in the world. Over the past 25 years, they have developed six novel antibiotics, two of which were launched during the COVID-19 pandemic, the first antibiotics to be discovered and developed entirely in India.

Their success is further underscored by the fact that Dr. Bhagwat’s team has filed over 400 patents, with 295 of them granted—a record unmatched by even the biggest pharmaceutical companies. These achievements have not only positioned Dr. Bhagwat’s team as global leaders in antibiotic research but have also made a significant impact on global health, particularly in combating antibiotic resistance.

Looking forward, Dr. Bhagwat emphasized the need for continued innovation and global impact in pharmaceutical research. He shared his vision for the future, where his team aims to remain at the forefront of antibiotic discovery, continually developing new products to address the ever-evolving challenges of antibiotic resistance.

Dr. Bhagwat also spoke about the importance of fostering a collaborative, zero-ego environment within research teams. He credited this culture as a key factor in his team’s success, enabling them to work together effectively and innovate at the highest level.

As the closing remark, Dr. Bhagwat offered words of wisdom to the next generation of scientists. He encouraged them to stay committed to their work, to embrace the process rather than focusing solely on outcomes, and to maintain an emotional connection to their projects. He reminded them that significant contributions to science require dedication, patience, and a willingness to face and overcome challenges.

Dr. Sachin Bhagwat’s speech was not just a reflection on his past achievements but a powerful call to action for future leaders in science and medicine. His journey serves as an inspiring example of what can be accomplished with determination, innovation, and a collaborative spirit.
