The summit served as a melting pot of ideas and perspectives as enthusiastic students displayed immense youthful energy, leaving the campus buzzing with unbridled excitement. Representing the transforming dynamics of education in India, the event left the participating students richer in soft skills, the spirit of learning, leadership, and collaboration. Its theme of ‘Celebrating the Youth’, resonated deeply with the energy and the enthusiasm demonstrated by the participants.

The opening ceremony of the three-day summit took place at the Emerald Heights International School, and the programmes on the two subsequent days were hosted at the NMIMS Indore Campus.

Delegation, both from the host city of Indore, emerging winners in most of the competitions. Winners were presented with certificates, awards, and medals.

The event included several events and workshops. The ‘MU20 Under 20’ honoured the accomplishments of young talents across domains and the ‘Entrepreneur Challenge’, organised in partnership with the Government of India as part of their ‘Start-Up India’ initiative, inculcated the entrepreneurial spirit among students. The students were also provided with an opportunity to build a working prototype of their original business ideas and present it in front of industry leaders and prospective investors. The winners of the Entrepreneurial Challenge, Sanskaar Valley School received funding of ₹50,000 from Anuj Kanwar, Founder of School Sharks

At the ‘MU20x’ held in partnership with Josh Talks, Prabhav Joshi, a 12-year-old student inspired the audience with rich insights on art therapy. Meanwhile, the ‘Cultural Walk’ in partnership with INIFD Indore and Optional Media Solutions saw students showcase the diverse colours of India.

Students with artistic aspirations were enthralled by the workshops on performing arts by a team from well-known actor Mr Anupam Kher’s film school, ‘Actor Prepares’. They organised the ‘Theatrics Challenge’, where students entertained live audiences by displaying their acting and storytelling skills.

The ‘Impact Challenge’ empowered students to come up with innovative solutions for urgent global issues, as they created sustainable solutions and gained valuable problem-solving experience and teamwork skills. The ‘Model United Nations Committees’, brought together students from various schools transcending regional boundaries as they addressed pressing global issues through diplomacy and collaboration.

Commenting on the massive success of the event and its impact on NMIMS Indore and its students, Dr. Anshuman Jaswal, Director, NMIMS Indore, said, “The MU20 High Summit was a transformative forum of knowledge exchange. We gained new perspectives through the summit and were introduced to a whole new outlook towards teaching and learning. The success of the event has inspired us to organise such meaningful events at the college level.”

The Guest of Honor, Shri Sheshadri Sevalgi, CFO of General Mills, added a touch of grandeur to the occasion. The event took place at the Seminar Hall, Second Floor of NMIMS Indore. Shri Snehal Desai, Former CFO, Adani Group Ltd. in his address, shared some pearls of wisdom with the graduating students. He said, “Growth in any corporate set-up will come only when they recognize your commitment to the organization. Commitment is the most important reason for success. You must strive to complete whatever job you are assigned gracefully. I will advise you to get out of the social media culture and your smartphones and instead read voraciously and have a hobby. Most importantly, you must ensure that you work with people who challenge you day in and day out.”

Shri Sheshadri Sevalgi, CFO of General Mills, said, “If you want to grow in life, have insights, don’t be dismissive of anyone imparting knowledge. I would like to share the three mantras that have worked for me – be bold in your aspirations; have self-belief and confidence and invest in yourself – have a sense of purpose and build your overall potential and capability.”

Dr. Anshuman Jaswal, Director, SVKM’s NMIMS Indore shared insightful reviews of the School of Technology Management & Engineering (STME) and School of Commerce (SOC), reflecting on their contributions to academia and society and said, “You should be proud to be getting your degree from such an esteemed institution. In any area, technology is taking precedence. There is going to be a leap in technology – a revolution soon. And you will be at the helm of industries when this happens. The hackathon, launched by the Ministry of Education’s Innovation Cell, AICTE, in collaboration with the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D)(MHA) and the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C), aimed to design and develop innovative solutions using live CCTV feeds to automatically detect incidents related to street crime, violence, burglary, theft, infiltration, and unauthorized access. The NMIMS Indore STME team, led by Sam Varghese, successfully created an exceptional machine learning model that analyzed CCTV footage in real-time, identifying accidents, and illegal activities, and providing instant alerts to the nearest authorities.

Expressing his delight, Sam Varghese, the team lead, stated, “I still can’t believe it! Out of all the thousands of teams in the advanced CCTV analysis domain of the country, we were chosen as one of the top 5. It’s truly unbelievable! We couldn’t be happier knowing that our hard work and dedication have been acknowledged by the Government of India on a national level. It’s an absolute honor.”

Avni Bhardwaj, a team member, shared her thoughts on the achievement, saying, “We knew our idea was great, but we always had this uncertainty of selection as there is cutthroat competition. Upon hearing the news, it took a little time to process the shock, but deep inside, it was expected.”

NMIMS Indore STME takes immense pride in nurturing such innovative and talented students. Dr. Aaquil Bunglowala, the head of STME, provided valuable guidance and support to the team, ensuring their success.

The students faced numerous challenges during their journey, including balancing the project alongside their academic commitments and forming an efficient team. However, their determination, perseverance, and utilization of advanced technologies, such as TensorFlow and YOLOv7, enabled them to overcome these obstacles.

The impact of their invention on society is substantial. By employing their advanced machine learning model, incidents can be detected, analyzed, and reported promptly, facilitating timely intervention by the authorities. The innovative project gained widespread recognition after Sam shared details about it on LinkedIn. Professionals from various backgrounds commended the ML model for its potential to transform the way we interact with devices.

At the core of the project is a program that activates the device’s camera and uses hand gestures as commands to control the computer. This breakthrough invention opens up new possibilities for intuitive computing across a wide range of devices and applications.

When asked about his achievement, Sam expressed his awe and pride, stating, “I find it absolutely fascinating to witness the technology in action, especially considering the fact that I am the very first person who developed this ground-breaking innovation. It’s a truly great feeling to know that this cutting-edge technology has the potential to benefit a broader range of society, empowering them with its advantages.”

The success of this project was made possible through the support and motivation provided by NMIMS Indore. Professors and colleagues at the institution encouraged Sam throughout the development process, contributing to the realization of this dream project.

Creating such an advanced ML model posed significant challenges for Sam. The project required an extensive dataset comprising over 30,000 data points for training the model. Plus, Sam also needed a strong understanding of advanced coordinate geometry to identify and interpret custom gestures accurately. Despite these challenges, the student’s determination and dedication led to the successful completion of the project.

The impact of Sam’s invention extends beyond its immediate applications. The ML model’s precise hand landmark detection and tracking capabilities have the potential to become the backbone of Augmented and Virtual Reality technologies. Moreover, this technology opens up opportunities for individuals with physical disabilities, allowing them to operate computers and devices using simple hand gestures.

The event started with the lighting of lamp by the Director NMIMS Dr. Prachi Gharpure, Convener of the event and Associate Dean, School of Technology Management & Engineering  Dr. Aaquil Bunglowala, President of the student organizing committee Mr. Niraj Vispute.  Director in her inaugural address welcomed all the speakers and spoke about the origin, purpose, and importance of TEDx events.

The event witnessed some awe inspiring and inspiring talks. Mr. Manish Tyagi, the stand-up comic, also known as The Knotty Commander spoke on the topic “Conversations Flow More”. He accentuated on the importance of having conversation with people without having the fear of being judged or advised. Mr. Rahul Bhatnagar laid down his idea of using social media to create and develop businesses. Mr. Nihad Panju, a meningitis survivor and a marathon runner who has represented India on global stage asserted that people must not allow any kind of disability to stop them from achieving their dreams. Divya Rathod an alumnus of NMIMS University spoke about the importance of amalgamation of scientific research and entrepreneurship. Co-founder of ChaiKaapi Mr. Athar Ali Nagpurwala in a very moving speech enthralled audience with a simple yet powerful idea of love and empathy and how these helped him in his own journey of life. Modern Sufi Ms. Vani Kabir spoke about her challenges of being a single mother and provided guidelines for girls and women how to pursue their dreams and career despite setbacks in personal life.

Convener of the event and Associate Dean, STME Dr. Aaquil Bunglowala proposed a vote of thanks extending his gratitude to everyone for making this event possible and successful.
