Prof. T. G. Sitharam Graces NMIMS 23rd University Day, Calls for Experiential and Peer Learning in Higher Education

Mumbai, January 2026: Marching swiftly towards its silver jubilee as a Deemed-to-be University, SVKM’s NMIMS celebrated its 23rd University Day, reflecting on a journey defined by vision, perseverance, and a commitment to shaping future-ready leaders. The occasion graced by Prof. (Dr.) T. G. Sitharam, Former Chairman of All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi and brought together faculty, students, staff, alumni, and distinguished dignitaries to honour NMIMS’ legacy of academic excellence, innovation, and transformation.

Dr. Ramesh Bhat, Vice Chancellor, SVKM’s NMIMS, welcomed the gathering, highlighting the institution’s growth and milestones, said, “The journey of NMIMS traces its roots back to 1934 with the establishment of Shri Vile Parle Kelavani Mandal SVKM, an initiative driven by a visionary dream to nurture holistic education. This foundation became the cornerstone for what would eventually evolve into a globally respected institution. Today we take pride in our growth across multiple campuses, our achievements in research and innovation, and our commitment to shaping future-ready leaders.”

Dr. Jayant P. Gandhi, Hon. Secretary, SVKM, reflected on the university’s transformative impact on students and its focus on innovation, said, “At NMIMS, we are not only providing education and information, we are transforming students by equipping them with strong soft skills, leadership qualities, and negotiation abilities. Going forward, our focus must be on innovation, research, experiential learning, and startups so that our students emerge as confident leaders ready to shape the future.”

The Chief Guest, Prof. Dr. T. G. Sitharam, addressed the audience on the evolving landscape of higher education and India’s growing role in global innovation, said, “Learning now happens through peer learning, self-learning, collaborative learning, and experiential learning as Professor Ramesh Bhat highlighted. Today in this self-learning space many things have changed. Students can take courses from their bedroom or kitchen anywhere they want and appear for exams through NPTEL and earn credits. Many smaller universities still find implementation a challenge but both UGC and AICTE have already provided provisions to take up such courses through self-learning.”

The ceremony also saw the presence ofDr. Tanmoy Chakraborty, Registrar, SVKM’s NMIMS Deemed-to-be University, Dr. Abhishek Ranjan, Pro Vice Chancellor, and Prof. Seema Mahajan, Pro Vice Chancellor and Director, School of Entrepreneurship & Family Business Management.

During the celebrations, NMIMS released several important publications, including We Care: Civic Engagement Internship Annual Report 2024-25, We Care Anthology, NMIMS Management Review 2025, and BSSA Studios BSSA Reviews Special Issue 001. The event highlighted the university’s dedication to research as well as academic excellence.

Faculty and staff were felicitated for their contributions, and awards were presented to the top 26 poster entries at the Research Embedded Learning Symposium, recognizing outstanding research and innovation among students.

Dr. Meena Chintamaneni, Pro-Vice Chancellor, extended her vote of thanks, acknowledging the collective efforts behind the event. The 23rd University Day highlighted NMIMS’ commitment to academic excellence, research, innovation, and leadership, reaffirming its role in shaping students for success both in India and globally.
