Chandigarh, August 2026: The School of Law, SVKM’s NMIMS Chandigarh, hosted a Special Lecture on “Law as a Profession & a Public Calling” on 22 August 2026, featuring Hon’ble Mr. Justice J. Alok Jain, Judge, High Court of Punjab and Haryana, as the Resource Person. The session offered students valuable insights into the responsibilities of legal professionals and the wider role of law in serving society.
Hon’ble Justice J. Alok Jain was welcomed by Prof. Dr. Jyotsna S., Campus Director, NMIMS Chandigarh; Dr. Nandan Sharma, Associate Dean, School of Law; Mr. Abhinav Kaushik, Deputy Registrar; Dr. Tanmeet Kaur Sahiwal, Program Chairperson, School of Law; Dr. Shefali Singh, Assistant Professor, School of Law; and Dr. Mehak Rai Sandhu, Assistant Professor, School of Law, along with members of the OCAC Committee and student representatives.
The session began with an overview of the Hon’ble Judge’s distinguished professional journey as a practising advocate and member of the judiciary, setting the context for an engaging interaction with the students.
Addressing the gathering, Hon’ble Justice J. Alok Jain spoke about the importance of professional integrity, reputation, responsibility and access to justice in the legal profession. He emphasised that lawyers have a significant role to play beyond representing clients, describing them as future peace-makers and responsible custodians of justice. He encouraged students to approach the profession with a strong sense of ethics and an understanding of their responsibility towards society.
The lecture also covered several important aspects of the legal system, including mediation and Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), Lok Adalats, judicial reforms, the role of courts in dispute resolution, and the balance between rights and duties. Drawing on his professional experience, Justice Jain shared practical perspectives on the realities of legal practice and the responsibilities that accompany the profession.
An engaging Q&A session further enriched the interaction, with students raising questions around litigation, mediation, criminal practice, professional ethics and the role of lawyers in society. The discussion provided students with an opportunity to understand the practical dimensions of the legal profession and gain perspectives from an experienced member of the judiciary.
As a mark of respect and appreciation, Hon’ble Justice J. Alok Jain was felicitated by Prof. Dr. Jyotsna S., Campus Director, NMIMS Chandigarh, along with faculty members.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Nandan Sharma, Associate Dean, School of Law, who expressed gratitude to the Hon’ble Judge, faculty members, the OCAC Committee and all participants for contributing to the success of the session.
