  • Dr. Sachin Bhagwat, Chief Scientific Officer, Drug Discovery Research Centre,  Wokhardt graced the Convocation 2024 for of School of Pharmacy & Technology Management and School of Agricultural Sciences and Technology at  SVKM’s NMIMS, Mukesh Patel Technology Park, Shirpur Campus, as Chief Guest on 31st August 2024.

Dr.

A pioneer in the field of antibiotic research, Dr. Bhagwat shared his 30-year journey in the pharmaceutical industry and offered a rare glimpse into the challenges, triumphs, and lessons learned throughout his distinguished career.

Dr. Bhagwat began his speech by reflecting on his early career, which started over 30 years ago. He spoke candidly about the obstacles he faced as a young scientist, particularly in the field of antibiotic research – a field that, at the time, was fraught with uncertainty and scepticism. Despite these challenges, Dr. Bhagwat and his team remained steadfast in their commitment to making a significant impact in the world of medicine.

One of the most poignant moments in Dr. Bhagwat’s speech was his discussion of the pivotal period in the 1990s when India signed the TRIPS agreement, a move that fundamentally changed the landscape of pharmaceutical research in the country. Dr. Bhagwat described how this forced the Indian pharmaceutical industry to shift from simply replicating existing drugs to innovating new ones, a challenge that his team embraced wholeheartedly.

Dr. Bhagwat’s team made history by entering the antibiotic field at a time when most major pharmaceutical companies were exiting due to the immense challenges and limited success in discovering new antibiotics. He described the painstaking process of building a research team from the ground up, often recruiting talent from small towns and training them to become world-class scientists.

A key theme of Dr. Bhagwat’s speech was the importance of embracing failure as part of the innovation process. He emphasized that in scientific research, failures are inevitable but necessary steps toward success. This mindset has been integral to his team’s approach, allowing them to push the boundaries of what is possible in antibiotic research.

Dr. Bhagwat’s dedication to antibiotic research has paid off in extraordinary ways. Today, his team is recognized as one of the largest and most successful antibiotic discovery teams in the world. Over the past 25 years, they have developed six novel antibiotics, two of which were launched during the COVID-19 pandemic, the first antibiotics to be discovered and developed entirely in India.

Their success is further underscored by the fact that Dr. Bhagwat’s team has filed over 400 patents, with 295 of them granted—a record unmatched by even the biggest pharmaceutical companies. These achievements have not only positioned Dr. Bhagwat’s team as global leaders in antibiotic research but have also made a significant impact on global health, particularly in combating antibiotic resistance.

Looking forward, Dr. Bhagwat emphasized the need for continued innovation and global impact in pharmaceutical research. He shared his vision for the future, where his team aims to remain at the forefront of antibiotic discovery, continually developing new products to address the ever-evolving challenges of antibiotic resistance.

Dr. Bhagwat also spoke about the importance of fostering a collaborative, zero-ego environment within research teams. He credited this culture as a key factor in his team’s success, enabling them to work together effectively and innovate at the highest level.

As the closing remark, Dr. Bhagwat offered words of wisdom to the next generation of scientists. He encouraged them to stay committed to their work, to embrace the process rather than focusing solely on outcomes, and to maintain an emotional connection to their projects. He reminded them that significant contributions to science require dedication, patience, and a willingness to face and overcome challenges.

Dr. Sachin Bhagwat’s speech was not just a reflection on his past achievements but a powerful call to action for future leaders in science and medicine. His journey serves as an inspiring example of what can be accomplished with determination, innovation, and a collaborative spirit.

  • NMIMS MPSTME and Oakland University Sign MoU to Strengthen Academic and Research Collaboration

NMIMS MPSTME and Oakland University Sign MoU to Strengthen Academic and Research Collaboration

    Mumbai, India-13th August 2024

NMIMS Mukesh Patel School of Technology Management & Engineering (MPSTME) has entered into a significant partnership with Oakland University, USA, by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 13th August 2024 to nurture collaboration in various academic and research areas.

The MoU signing ceremony commenced with an address by Dr. Anne Koteswararao, Dean of MPSTME, highlighting this collaboration’s practical benefits: “Our focus is on creating real opportunities for MBA Tech students, especially in fields like AI, data science, and computing engineering. This partnership will enable joint research, faculty exchanges, and more, ensuring our students gain valuable experience. However, the success of this MOU lies in its outcomes. Without tangible results, it remains just a piece of paper. We’re committed to making this collaboration meaningful and beneficial for our students.”

This strategic agreement between NMIMS MPSTME and Oakland University opens doors for extensive cooperation in various academic and research domains. The institutions have committed to facilitating student exchanges at both undergraduate and graduate levels, allowing students to benefit from international academic experiences. Faculty exchanges will also be encouraged, providing opportunities for teaching and collaborative research across both campuses. MoU promotes global transfer programs, dual degrees, joint research initiatives, and resource pooling for external funding.

The MoU also includes provisions for organizing joint conferences, workshops, and seminars, allowing students and faculty to share knowledge and research findings with their peers. One of the standout features of the collaboration is the capstone class, a semester-long, industry-sponsored project that offers students hands-on experience through real-world projects. Students will have the chance to spend one day a week on-site, working closely with industry professionals, which can lead to internships, Optional Practical Training (OPT) in the USA, and 100% job placements in Automotive, Healthcare, Financial, Accounting, and IT firms.

One of the key advantages highlighted about this partnership is the cost-effectiveness of the academic programs. The MS in Business Analytics (MSBA) and MS in Information & Technology Management (MSITM) programs, which are STEM-coded, can be completed in as little as 1 to 1.5 years, depending on the student’s prior education. Students will benefit from in-state tuition rates thanks to scholarships covering the difference between out-of-state and in-state tuition.

In addition, Oakland University will waive admission requirements such as the GRE, GMAT, and TOEFL exams, further lowering the barriers to entry for prospective students. This initiative aligns with NMIMS’s commitment to making high-quality education accessible to all.

The MoU signing ceremony was attended by key representatives from both institutions, including Dr. Vijayan Sugumaran, who expressed optimism about the future of this partnership: “This partnership between NMIMS and Oakland University opens a world of opportunities for both faculty and students. By nurturing collaboration across projects and exchange programs, we are setting the stage for a truly enriching academic experience. Students will benefit from our small class sizes, which ensure personalized attention, and the diverse professional avenues available in Southeast Michigan. Whether it’s through research, internships, or international projects, this agreement is designed to equip our students with the skills and connections they need to succeed globally.

The ceremony was then addressed by Ms. Meena Saxena, Director of International Linkages at NMIMS. In her remarks, Ms. Saxena highlighted, “The easiest part is signing a MoU, but the real challenge lies in what follows. This agreement stands out because Professor Vijay meticulously planned every detail beforehand, ensuring clarity on how it will be executed, including the exceptional offer of in-state tuition rates for our students – making this partnership truly beneficial.”

The ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks and a group photograph, symbolizing the unity and shared vision of NMIMS MPSTME and Oakland University as they go on board this exciting new venture together.

Welcoming the new batch to NMIMS PDSE&FBM, Dr. Ramesh Bhat said, “Our curriculum aims to transform you into value creators through Knowledge, Attitude, Skills, and Habits (KASH). Seek knowledge, develop skills with the right attitude, and treat classes like board meetings. Studies show prepared students learn 30-40% more. Optimize KASH for success by collaborating, networking, reflecting on learning, and minimizing distractions. Make this world-class education a life-defining experience.”

Prof. Seema Mahajan, in her address, said, “Thank you for choosing NMIMS. As future leaders, adaptability, resilience and innovative thinking will be your assets. At PDSE, we focus on quality education and a strong business foundation, along with networking opportunities because your network is your net worth. Be open-minded, collaborative and proactive, ready to unlearn and relearn and I am confident you will emerge as successful business leaders.”

Mr. Darshil Shah said, “Like all of you here, I dared to dream and challenge the status quo of building something from the ground up. Over the years, I have learnt the importance of continuous consumer innovation, diversity and inclusion; leveraging data to make informed decisions and the power of purpose-driven leadership. I urge you to take risks but with humility and a willingness to learn.”

Reminiscing his days at PDSE, Divyam Sanghavi said, “NMIMS has taught us to be ready for all the challenges, opportunities and ideas that will come our way; to be relevant by continuously learning; to meet interesting people across industries and to be resourceful towards everyone we meet. It is important to stick to your ethics and do the right thing. I wish you all the best.”

Mr. Jacob George said, “At NMIMS, I learnt to work with peers and how to pitch ideas. In 2019, when I expanded my business to an acquisition, there were long negotiations where my interactions with my classmates came in handy. In the end, for an entrepreneur, it is about having grit, learning from failures and embracing them.”
