Mumbai, 31 July, 2023 – SVKM’s NMIMS Mukesh Patel School of Technology Management & Engineering (MPSTME), along with IEEE Bombay Section Student Activities Committee, organised an enlightening and informative session, “Climate Change: An Expert Talk”. The event featured renowned expert and visionary, Professor Saifur Rahman, who addressed the critical importance of sustaining the climate and the urgent need for collective action.
Professor Saifur Rahman is the founding director of the Advanced Research Institute at Virginia Tech, USA. He is IEEE President USA.  He also directs the Center for Energy and the Global Environment at the university. He is a distinguished Life Fellow of the IEEE and recipient of the prestigious IEEE Millennium Medal. In 2018 and 2019, he held the notable position of President of the IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES). He also founded BEM Controls, LLC, a US-based building energy management software company. Additionally, he chaired the US National Science Foundation Advisory Committee for International Science and Engineering from 2010 to 2013.
Expressing his strong viewpoints on sustainability and the need to address climate change, he said, “I wish to discuss why it is a challenge to sustain the climate and why it is important. If you see what’s happening today, there are unprecedented disasters. Issues like the heavy rains in Delhi and Saudi Arabia and the forest fires in Siberia as a result of the North Pole warming up and icebergs breaking up all demand our attention. As humans, we have the responsibility to protect the species.”
He also emphasized on the importance of educating the girls on climate and engineering and said on the matter, “If a girl doesn’t know what engineering and climate are by the age of 12, she will never know. Currently, there are 20% of girls in engineering in the US, 30% of girls in engineering in India, and more than 50% of girls in engineering in Malaysia. So my point is to make them understand. Climate change is an issue that has to be understood by everybody – from high school teachers to bankers to doctors and lawyers.”
This session on Climate Change proved to be highly beneficial for the students. Professor Saifur Rahman’s informative discourse, students gained a deeper understanding of the pressing issue of climate change and its impact on our planet. The enriching experience allowed the students to connect with professionals and peers interested in making a positive impact on the environment.
As he highlighted the critical importance of taking immediate and collective action to address the environmental challenges we face, it not only raised awareness but also inspired and motivated the MPSTME students to contribute towards sustainable solutions and be agents of change in combating climate change. By engaging in such initiatives, SVKM’s NMIMS Mukesh Patel School of Technology Management & Engineering (MPSTME) continues to fulfil its mission of providing comprehensive education that aligns with the ever-evolving needs of society.
“Through enlightening sessions like ‘Climate Change: An Expert Talk,’ we sow the seeds of awareness and nurture the growth of a sustainable future. Together, with visionaries like Professor Saifur Rahman, we shall rise to the occasion and forge a path of stewardship for our generations.”, said Dr. Alka Mahajan, Dean, MPSTME, as an appreciation towards this unforgettable session which urged each and everyone to be the catalysts of change.
Shri. Anand Suhas Gharpure, Chair IEEE Bombay Section said, “ When Engineers talks about and takes up the Climate Change Challenge they mean business and once IEEE Members takes up any challenge nothing is impossible.  We are sure that we will be able to achieve 2030 goals well before that.  It’s not only IEEE President’s vision but IEEE as a whole.  IEEE Bombay Section is bound by it’s duty towards the Sustainable Future. ”

In an impressive feat, Mr. Pawan Rajput and Mr. Manoj Mali, final year B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture students at NMIMS School of Agricultural Sciences & Technology (SAST), have published a patent titled “Chemical-Free Storage-cum-Selling Device for Enhanced Shelf Life of Fruits and Vegetables.” This groundbreaking invention showcases the innovative capabilities and practical knowledge of the students, highlighting the success of the systematic program structure at SAST.
The program structure at SAST follows a comprehensive approach, focusing on fundamental education in the first year, applied aspects in the second year, technology aspects in the third year, and field training throughout the final year. During their third year, Mr. Pawan Rajput and Mr. Manoj Mali studied courses on post-harvest technology and food processing, where they identified the gaps in the storage, packaging, and processing of perishable fruits and vegetables.
Their realization of the challenges faced by resource-poor small and marginal farmers, including price fluctuations and post-harvest wastage, during their village attachment program in rural areas of Dhule and Jalgaon, became the driving force behind their innovative idea. After extensive research and analysis of current practices, storage structures, and packaging materials, they developed a vacuum storage device design equipped with accessories that regulate temperature, inhibit microbial growth, and absorb undesirable gases.
The design provides a controlled environment for stored produce, minimizing decay, bacterial growth, and wilting. It incorporates natural and plant-based ingredients in the anti-microbial unit to prevent food spoilage caused by microbial contaminants. The device also features wheels for easy mobility and can be controlled through a user device via a mobile-based app, enabling real-time monitoring of temperature, pressure, and other parameters.
This notable achievement by Mr. Pawan Rajput and Mr. Manoj Mali underscores the inspiring learning environment and curriculum at SAST, which emphasizes classroom and field-oriented learning systems. The school’s principles of “Earn while Learn” and “Materialize the ideas” encourage an environment that nurtures scientific, entrepreneurial, sporting, and cultural talents among its students.
Dr. Mallikarjun Dhotre, Assistant Professor (Horticulture) at SAST, played a crucial role in providing technical support and moral encouragement throughout the development of the design. His guidance and expertise have been instrumental in the success of this invention.
The patent publication by Mr. Pawan Rajput and Mr. Manoj Mali stands as a significant milestone for SAST, highlighting the school’s commitment towards promoting innovation and disruptive technologies for the benefit of the farming community. This accomplishment sets a benchmark for future graduates and further establishes SAST as a leading institution in agricultural education and research.

Hyderabad, 03 July, 2023: Two brilliant minds from NMIMS University in Hyderabad, S. Pavithra and Trisha Reddy, have made a remarkable breakthrough in smart city development. Their research paper, “A Technological-Based Lighting System for Easy Life,” presented at the IBSSC 2023 conference in Mumbai, has caught the attention of academia and industry alike. These first-year students from the School of Technology Management & Engineering have created a connected drone-based emergency lighting system.

Imagine clusters of drones equipped with intelligent lighting modules, ready to brighten dark areas during power outages or emergencies. These drones transmit real-time video to nearby police stations, improving public safety. This innovative invention could also potentially save lives and help those stranded on highways. The system also has applications beyond emergencies, such as merging surveillance cameras with intelligent lighting to create a virtual security network, deterring wrongdoers and ensuring safety.

Merely 19 years old, Pavithra and Trisha from 1st year B.Tech. Computer Science and Engineering (Data Science) at School of Technology Management & Engineering showed dedication and balanced their academic pursuits with the demands of their project. Their achievements have inspired their peers and showcased the potential of research and innovation. Pavithra and Trisha’s success story has opened doors for future students, encouraging them to dream big and strive for excellence.

Their journey throughout this research endeavor has been both inspiring and challenging. Despite being first-year students, they exhibited exceptional dedication and a thirst for knowledge. Their meticulous process involved gathering data from various reliable sources, selecting appropriate references, and interpreting the information effectively. The entire project spanned three months, during which they managed to strike a balance between their academic commitments and research work by investing extra hours in the evening.

Pavithra and Trisha expressed their gratitude to Dr. Siddhartha Ghosh, acknowledging his mentorship and emphasis on self-learning. His guidance empowered them to take ownership of their research work, encouraging independent exploration and problem-solving. This approach instilled in them a research-oriented mindset and enabled them to deliver their research paper successfully. Despite being the youngest participants at the IBSSC conference, they received appreciation from scientists and professors, leaving a lasting impression on the attendees. Their confidence can be attributed to the regular activities, including presentations, conducted at NMIMS Hyderabad through their various clubs.

Pavitra and Trisha’s parents, initially concerned about their education as the first batch students at NMIMS Hyderabad, now proudly celebrate their achievements and laud the support of the director and faculty.

The successful research undertaken by Pavithra and Trisha not only establishes a significant milestone for NMIMS Hyderabad but also inspires future batches of students to explore research opportunities and aim for academic excellence.

Commending Pavitra and Trisha for their scientific temperament and having the courage to stand in front of a daunting audience to present their paper, Dr. Siddhartha Ghosh, Director, NMIMS Hyderabad stresses the significance of academic research. He says “We, as academics, firmly believe in the criticality of prioritizing academic research due to its ability to facilitate direct student engagement and nurture intellectual growth. Once a research mind is created, students will acquire the skills to study better, prepare high-quality assignments, and become less reliant on faculty and classes. Besides, to thrive in the professional world, it is crucial to possess a research-oriented mind. This mindset empowers individuals to delve into the complexities of projects, seek knowledge from diverse sources such as online platforms, libraries, and journals, and engage in meaningful discussions with peers. Those with a research-oriented mind are highly sought after by product development companies in the software industry. In my view, the universe – where learning is happening across physical and virtual worlds, is the new school.”

“This achievement holds special significance as it is the result of the first batch of engineering students at the Hyderabad campus. The success of Pavithra and Trisha will undoubtedly inspire future students, and the institution aims to continue fostering a culture of research and innovation,” he adds proudly.

As #RevengeBuying #RevengeSpending become a trending topic of discussion, Hospitality Industry has all the reasons to be bullish on 2022-23

Over the years, one thing we have learned is that a crisis breeds the ground for higher innovation and opportunities if monetized efficiently and resourcefully. The pandemic has elevated the need for reminiscing the softer tone of life charred with higher adoption of technology. The need to flatten the COVID-19 curve, led to some hard-hitting measures such as community lockdowns, social distancing, stay-at-home orders, travel, and mobility restrictions, resulting in a temporary closure of many hospitality businesses and a significant drop in demand. However, now as we are slowly returning to normalcy, the legacy habits of dining and traveling are spurting across the industry. The pent-up demand from the past two years is shaping the recovery path for the hospitality industry.

There are obvious signs that the industry will continue to improve in the coming years. By 2028, the Indian tourism industry’s contribution to the GDP is expected to reach US$ 512 billion. The hotel industry is expected to reach a valuation of INR 1,210.87 Billion by 2023. Further, the travel market is projected to reach US$ 125 billion by FY27. Moreover, the Indian government allowing 100% foreign direct investment in tourism construction projects, development of hotels, resorts, and recreational facilities, will act as a driving force for the development of the sector.

The industry is witnessing a stronger rebound in leisure than in corporate travel. The current trend to work remotely accelerated the growth of this segment allowing combining both business and pleasure travel. As per the information available from many universities abroad in an article sponsored by the Les Roche Global Hospitality Education, the simple human desire to reconnect after months of lockdowns is expected to drive increased leisure trip spending. People will travel to compensate for their missed vacation time. According to a 2022 trends survey by Booking.com, 79 % of travellers are now more receptive to varied sorts of vacations. While the hospitality sector is slowly rebounding, the COVID-19 situation continues to have a significant influence on how businesses operate in the hospitality industry to safeguard the health and wellbeing of employees and customers.

Enabling Technology-Driven Experiences

The rapid expansion of the industry in India and throughout the world can easily be connected to the revolution brought about by digitalization and technological innovation. In the hospitality business, online reservations and technology-enabled hotel management systems have already established themselves and currently, technological developments in customer service are accelerating substantially. Reduced human intervention for a seamless check-in and check-out, as well as minimizing interactions at restaurants, will be extensively embraced in addition to the benefits of technology. Indian consumers are growing more tech-savvy, which will aid the advancement of technology in the industry.

Recovery to Domestic Travel

International travel will likely start up slowly, but domestic travel is already picking up rapidly, as people look forward to unwinding after the consistent lockdowns. Domestic travellers’ willingness to visit more of the country will help the industries recover from the effects of Omicron, at least until international travel returns to normal. Domestic hotels and homestays are appealing most to the hybrid workers, stay-cationers, and business and leisure travellers who demand accessibility, affordability, connectivity, and comfort. ‘Revenge Tourism’ is also becoming a strong facet, especially with the vaccine rollout.

Enhancing Experiences with Safety and Sustainability

Unique and unexplored experiences have been popular for a few years, and this trend is continuing even now. Due to the pandemic effect, people have grown more cautious about the hotel’s hygiene and sanitization. Travellers are willing to travel great distances for a safe location that offers an earthy, even rustic, immersed delightful trip away from the throngs of major sites. If hotels in tier-2 and tier-3 cities can provide safety and amenities, they would be able to embrace more visitors. Even simple services, such as pet-friendly hotels and sufficient safety precautions for Covid, will attract a rising number of tourists.

Author : Dr. Ruchita Verma, Dean, NMIMS School of Hospitality Management

The hotel industry demand has recovered at a sharper pace post-Covid 2.0 restrictions. The Indian hospitality sector has a critical role to play in the post-pandemic economic revival and has been announced as the fourth pillar of the Indian economy.
