Our dedication to safeguarding the environment and fostering awareness about the preservation of our precious wildlife and plant life was exemplified through this week-long celebration. This vibrant week comprised four impactful events, each carefully designed to echo the urgent call for conservation. We harnessed plastic waste, transforming it into community assets – benches, bins, and stationery. Our tri-fold drive united GreenCiti for e-waste reforestation and Robin Hood Army for educational nourishment, echoing our commitment to holistic conservation. Embracing the spirit of inquiry and innovation, our school envisions a curriculum where ‘Research’ is not just a component, but the very essence. PDSE&FBM IS BACK IN ACTION!
We bring you insights from the first thrilling event by Student Council of the academic year: Boardroom Competition! The echoes of passionate minds collided as the students of BBMM and IMBA came together in an electrifying display of intellect, strategy, and innovation. It was a place where ideologies took flight, ambitions were ignited, and the quest for brilliance reigned supreme.
A boardroom competition is a modified debate where participants are assigned corporate designations (CEO, CTO, CFO, COO, Director etc) of a company and presented with a fictional challenge in the form of a case study / crisis situation. They then simulate a boardroom and engage in discussions and debates to come up with solutions and strategies.
A preliminary round of group discussion was conducted on 11th of July, Tuesday.  The groups indulged into discussions on Topics like “To what extent is privatization good for the Indian economy”, “Is JIO’s GTM strategy of offering long term freemiums (like we saw in cases of JIO sim, JioCinema etc) unfair and anti-competitive?” and “In the context of gender & regional gaps, unprofitable valuation bubbles, job insecurity etc., Is entrepreneurship in India really headed in the right direction?” Out of 40 participants, 6 made it to the finals i.e., Boardroom round and will be representing various C – suits in the final and other 6 battled in the semi-final round i.e., rapid fire round where the candidates were paired up and quizzed objectively and subjectively on various business topics
The Final was a simulation of a corporate boardroom. All members were to go through a case to understand the company profile, their designations, and the crisis itself. The group of finalists were to proceed the meeting in accordance to their respective roles. New elements of surprise were introduced in the form of press releases and the entire board was questioned by the judges. After a tough consideration and discussion, the judges finally announced the winners:
    1)Winner- Bhavya Agarwal (CLO)
    2)Runner up- Pranav Khandelwal (CEO)
3)Second Runner up- Samriddhi Gupta (CMO)
Each of the finalist showcased incredible skill and passion, their unwavering commitment and relentless pursuit of excellence captivated each of us.

In an impressive feat, Mr. Pawan Rajput and Mr. Manoj Mali, final year B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture students at NMIMS School of Agricultural Sciences & Technology (SAST), have published a patent titled “Chemical-Free Storage-cum-Selling Device for Enhanced Shelf Life of Fruits and Vegetables.” This groundbreaking invention showcases the innovative capabilities and practical knowledge of the students, highlighting the success of the systematic program structure at SAST.
The program structure at SAST follows a comprehensive approach, focusing on fundamental education in the first year, applied aspects in the second year, technology aspects in the third year, and field training throughout the final year. During their third year, Mr. Pawan Rajput and Mr. Manoj Mali studied courses on post-harvest technology and food processing, where they identified the gaps in the storage, packaging, and processing of perishable fruits and vegetables.
Their realization of the challenges faced by resource-poor small and marginal farmers, including price fluctuations and post-harvest wastage, during their village attachment program in rural areas of Dhule and Jalgaon, became the driving force behind their innovative idea. After extensive research and analysis of current practices, storage structures, and packaging materials, they developed a vacuum storage device design equipped with accessories that regulate temperature, inhibit microbial growth, and absorb undesirable gases.
The design provides a controlled environment for stored produce, minimizing decay, bacterial growth, and wilting. It incorporates natural and plant-based ingredients in the anti-microbial unit to prevent food spoilage caused by microbial contaminants. The device also features wheels for easy mobility and can be controlled through a user device via a mobile-based app, enabling real-time monitoring of temperature, pressure, and other parameters.
This notable achievement by Mr. Pawan Rajput and Mr. Manoj Mali underscores the inspiring learning environment and curriculum at SAST, which emphasizes classroom and field-oriented learning systems. The school’s principles of “Earn while Learn” and “Materialize the ideas” encourage an environment that nurtures scientific, entrepreneurial, sporting, and cultural talents among its students.
Dr. Mallikarjun Dhotre, Assistant Professor (Horticulture) at SAST, played a crucial role in providing technical support and moral encouragement throughout the development of the design. His guidance and expertise have been instrumental in the success of this invention.
The patent publication by Mr. Pawan Rajput and Mr. Manoj Mali stands as a significant milestone for SAST, highlighting the school’s commitment towards promoting innovation and disruptive technologies for the benefit of the farming community. This accomplishment sets a benchmark for future graduates and further establishes SAST as a leading institution in agricultural education and research.

The morning session featured two eminent Industry speakers Mr. Achal Mittal, Co-founder of Luquiloans and Mr Satyam Manohar, Dabur-Business PnL Head – West and  earlier VP Business at Paytm. Mr Mittal talked about the use technology to match borrowers and lenders making borrowing cheaper and providing a more lucrative investment opportunity as compared to traditional investment avenues. Mr Manohar provided an overview of the Fintech industry. The afternoon session was led by NMIMS SBM Faculty Dr Chandrima Sikdar, Associate Dean and Professor who shared insights on Indian Economy the second fasted growing market in Asia and how Indian market with its one billion plus population, presents lucrative and diverse opportunities for Canadian businesses. Prof Papiya De Communications Area Chairperson, talked about India being multilingual, multi-ethnic society, with notable cultural differences across the 28 states and how business is rooted in building long-term relationship. She spiced up her session with several examples and videos.

Dr. Hamed Aghakhani, Professor of Marketing, Rowe School of Business, said, “I would like to express my gratitude for this opportunity. During our visit, we were deeply impressed by the advancements in India’s fintech industry. In comparison to the countries I’ve explored, India’s payment infrastructure stands out as exemplary. In Canada, we mostly use credit and physical cards, and the QR code system is not as prevalent. Currently, in Canada, vendors have to pay 2-3% transaction fees to the banks or service providers, which is a burden both to the vendors and eventually the customers. One aspect of the UPI infrastructure is that payment processing can be much simpler and more accessible to a wide range of vendors and clients. We are aware of the developments in India, such as the UPI system, and aspire to have a similar technology to enhance our financial systems.”

The delegation’s visit to India was a part of an international experience course, “Doing Business in Emerging Markets,” offered by the Rowe School of Business. The course aims to provide students with an understanding of the traditional challenges and opportunities Canadian businesses face when expanding their business to emerging markets, including those in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Eastern and Central Europe. The group consisted of 12 students from their Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Management, and Corporate Residency Master of Business Administration (CRMBA) programs.

Rachel Hammond, an MBA student at Dalhousie University, said her biggest takeaway from her visit to NMIMS Mumbai was, “Being here  and learning about fintech, it is so clear how advanced India is, and how much we as students and Canadians have to learn about India, the UPI system and its other advancements in fintech.. It is also impressive to see the partnership between the government and private industries in making things like the UPI system possible. I really admire that about India. I think that coming home with this understanding and realising what’s possible is remarkable, and that’s my biggest takeaway.”

A retrospective of Design Talk, a webinar organised by CII, and supported by NMIMS School of Design

“The world of poduct design and R&D is an international world,” said Dr Naushad Forbes, Co-Chairman, Forbes Marshall. “In order to compete effectively with the best, we must stay open to leading ideas and resources, whether in technology or in welcoming designers and engineers, from across the globe.”

He was speaking at the inaugural session of Design Talk, a series of webinars organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), in collaboration with World Design Organisation (WDO), and supported by NMIMS School of Design. The discussion marked the beginning of a CII-led initiative to sensitise Indian stakeholders about the benefits of investing in design and following good design practices. Featuring Dr Naushad Forbes in conversation with Prof. Manisha Phadke, Director NMIMS School of Design, it was an illuminating, hour-long discussion on the various aspects of design, its future, and the role it should play in building our nation. Other attendees included Prof. Pradyumna Vyas, Senior Advisor, CII; and Mr Srini Srinivasan, President, WDO.

Mr Srinivasan pointed out the pressing need to facilitate innovative design through open collaboration at a global level. “Sustainability is enshrined in the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, and it is imperative that we focus judiciously on it at all times,” he noted. “We can involve local communities for idea- and knowledge-sharing on a particular topic, and collectively develop solutions for design challenges in that particular context.”

Dr Forbes spoke at length about the role of design, humanising technology, localising design, building aesthetic public spaces, sustainability, and motivating design culture, in our organisations and the country as a whole. “There are two broad roles that design can play – it can help companies add value to their products, and it can improve our society through well-designed products, services and interfaces. For instance, our public spaces could benefit enormously through real design inputs.”

Prof. Phadke talked about developing a mindset to consume public spaces. These spaces designed with traditional and sustainable materials should enable ownership behaviours in users. In response to her query on the necessity of a societal approach to improving public spaces, Dr Forbes advocated a layered approach, noting that design-consciousness needs to be adopted very systematically and consciously before it can actually take root. He suggested that we begin with urban planning to improve building standards, followed by a peer-reviewed design process to systematically create public places. However, he also cautioned against the government being responsible for running the spaces, as public-run properties rarely fare well in terms of efficiency.

To illustrate the role of design in a social context, he cited the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Project in Ahmedabad. Once an unattractive area, today the riverfront has emerged as one of the best-developed and most popular public destinations in the city. In comparison, popular public places in other cities have developed in a haphazard manner, with little attention paid to the overall efficiency, beautification, or design. The careful planning of the Sabarmati Riverfront exemplifies how design and aesthetics should be implemented in a public space.

Dr Forbes also spoke about the necessity of scaling up India’s design capabilities, “The role of design needs to be a larger and deeper enterprise, in terms of how we manufacture our products, services, and public spaces. So, we must educate engineers about design, and instil confidence in designers to build a design culture in an organisation whilst designing products and services.”

It is currently estimated that the industry needs 62,000 designers this year in India alone, and this demand is expected to continue rising in the coming years. In this scenario, Dr Forbes’ views on the need for more capable designers and a systematic approach to design are especially significant.

Prof. Pradyumna Vyas summed up the discussion at the end as he recounted Prof. Forbes’ view on humanising design by infusing dignity, responsiveness, and a judicious balance between economy and sustainability, in public life.
