Mumbai, India, – SVKM’s NMIMS Deemed-to-be-University hosted a conference on Open Science held under the aegis of the ERASMUS Open Asia-Boosting engagements in higher education institutes in Open Science in India and Malaysia, in collaboration with leading universities from across the world. The consortium meeting for the partner schools took place on March 19 and 20, 2024, followed by the International Conference on Open Science on March 21 and 22, 2024 at NMIMS Mumbai.

The partner universities for the Open Asia ERASMUS Project included Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, India; University of Tampere, Finland; VU Amsterdam University, Netherlands; University of Malaya, University of Malaysia Sabah & University of Malaysia Sarawak- all from Malaysia; International School for Social and Business Studies and European Policy Development & Research Institute both from Slovenia.

Dr. Ramesh Bhat, Vice Chancellor of NMIMS was the Convenor of the conference, and Dr. Sharad Mhaiskar, Pro Vice Chancellor of NMIMS, and Dr. Olesea Sirbu, Vice-rector for International Relations at the Academy of Economic Studies of Moldova, served as the Co-Convenors. Meena Saxena, Director, International Linkages NMIMS University, is the ERASMUS Open Asia, Project Coordinator.

Extending a warm welcome to all the dignitaries, Dr. Ramesh Bhat, said, “The Open Science Forum is vital for researchers in tackling the problem of biased journal publications. About 60-70% of research faces hurdles in getting published due to this bias. With this forum, researchers can openly discuss their hypotheses, avoiding wasted time on unproductive topics. These interventions will promote open science and promote a positive shift in research culture. NMIMS is fully committed to embracing the OSF framework to drive forward a culture of open science and innovation.”

The two-day conference saw participants take part in discussions on various aspects of Open Science, including the Open Science experience across various countries, national policy development, community engagement, the significance of artificial intelligence in Open Science, commercial and open-source software, data-sharing, and open-access publishing.

Dr. Man Mohan Sharma, Emeritus Professor of Eminence, Institute of Chemical Technology, was the Chief Guest at the conference. Sharing a unique perspective, Dr. Sharma, said, “In universities, we have what is called spiritual freedom to pursue ideas. Research, contrary to normal belief, is unstructured because you don’t know the result. Open science encourages curiosity-driven research. It’s about trying new things without knowing the outcome. Failures are harbingers of success. If you want to do something original and you have that curiosity, how do you strike at a new idea? That treatment is not going to come without open science.”

Dr. Akhilesh Gupta, Senior Advisor, Department of Science and Technology (DST) and Former Secretary of the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) emphasised the importance of adopting an open science policy to create a vibrant environment through a vision for India’s Science, Technology and Innovation. He said this approach was crucial to align with the global transition from a closed to an open science world.

In an era marked by unprecedented technological advancements and complex societal challenges, the traditional paradigms of scientific research and knowledge dissemination are rapidly evolving. In India, the Open Science movement, symbolising the principles of transparency, collaboration, and accessibility crucial for addressing the intricate problems facing our world today, has begun to gain traction over the past few years. Open Access journals have proven pivotal in promoting Indian researchers in both, international and national databases, with central repositories boosting accessibility to scholarly publications.

According to Dr. Olesea Sirbu, “International collaboration is essential in advancing scientific research and ensuring its accessibility to all levels of society. This Open Science conference is an opportunity to strengthen ties between institutions and promote a culture of openness and inclusivity to encourage new opportunities for discovery and address global challenges in the field.”

Always at the forefront of emerging trends and innovation, faculty at SVKM’s NMIMS are actively involved in activities that support the implementation of open science, which includes collaborating on projects that align with the principles of open science, publishing in open-access journals, and utilising open-source software for research purposes.

Some faculty members of various schools and disciplines at SVKM’s NMIMS are working on research projects in compliance with the open science policy. For example, Dr. Kapil Juvale from the (SPPSPTM) is working in collaboration with the Drugs for Neglected Disease Initiative (DNDi), Geneva, to develop therapeutics for neglected diseases such as leishmaniasis.

Meanwhile, numerous faculty members at NMIMS publish their research in open-access journals, which enables immediate access to their work without any restrictions. The number of publications from NMIMS faculty in open-access journals has been rising of late.

At NMIMS, efforts are also on to transition from proprietary software to free open-source software. This is being done to support research, data management, and bibliography management. The Open Asia Project promotes Open Science principles among participating institutions, promoting transparency, collaboration, and innovation in scientific research. The conference, titled, ‘Unlocking Knowledge: A Conference on Open Science’, paved the way for a more inclusive and impactful scientific community throughout India by bringing scientists, researchers, and scholars together to explore the progressive potential of Open Science through discussions on project objectives, strategies, and future collaborations.

As part of the ERASMUS Open Asia Project, NMIMS signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Tampere, Finland. The signing ceremony, which also marked the end of the event, took place on March 22, 2024, and proved to be a milestone in international academic cooperation.

Mumbai, October 29, 2021: SVKM’s NMIMS’ Centre of Excellence in Analytics & Data Science (CoE-A&DS) has opened admissions to its highly regarded MBA (Business Analytics) in Mumbai. Students can apply for the 2-year (full-time) course till November 21st 2021. The course, developed in conjunction with erudite professors of NMIMS university, subject matter experts and industry practitioners, is designed to inculcate data-driven decision making along with managerial training. It caters to the high demand for proficiency in business analytics among management graduates in the current VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous) economy.

Speaking on the high demand for Business Analytics, Dr. Ramesh Bhat, Vice Chancellor of SVKM’s NMIMS University, said, “Business analytics is now prevalent across all sectors, be it manufacturing, e-commerce, BFSI or FMCG. Data is the key metric which can help enterprises evolve and grow. The requirement for Data Analytics professionals is growing at a fast pace with demand far outstripping supply.”
Highlighting the salient features of Business Analytics program, Dr. Sridhar Vaithianathan – Director of Centre of Excellence in Analytics & Data Science, SVKM’s NMIMS, Mumbai said, “Data science – which is considered both the art and science of making data-driven decisions – is playing a significant part in the way businesses function, and it impacts all walks of life. Globally, every organisation has made data science its top priority, but the fact remains that there is a severe dearth of data science skill sets across the world. The well-crafted program delivery is interspersed with contemporary pedagogy, practitioners’ sessions, a learner-centred summer internship program, and more. Capstone projects & hackathons mentored by seasoned experts and dedicated faculty members, data-driven entrepreneurial initiatives in collaboration with Atal Incubation Centre (AIC-NMIMS), along with dedicated placement support makes the programs unmatched”
To equip students with emerging technologies, the course includes key areas like Information Management, Advanced Analytics, Artificial Intelligence, Visualization and Reporting. As one of the highly sought-after management profiles, an MBA in business analytics can open up opportunities to work in the field of business intelligence, IT business analysis, Financial Analysis, Supply Chain analysis, Market Analysis, and business analysis consultant.

    • Be a Cross-section Leader focusing on four key areas: business, leadership skills, technology skills quotient, ability to handle data and create value out of it.
    • Follow T model of the carrier: Horizontal bar indicates the breadth of knowledge, vertical reflects core domain specialisation. The first few years focus on the vertical bar, and later years of life create horizontal bar confidence.
    • Understand the importance of conceptual clarity: what the concept means
    • Innovation does not happen just sitting in labs. Use ideas for doing something which has business value, scalability, matter to the community at large, some of which are going to do better
    • Do not search for nails if you have a hammer: Look at processes in a holistic manner and always focus on the big picture approach, problem and then find options to solve it.
    • How do you conduct yourself: Understand the importance of keeping yourself relevant, what does being relevant means, what you have done is just a start, the pursuit of relevance should not end, take initiatives and efforts to be always relevant
    • What comes back to you: Your authentic view, be authentic, present authentic view, remember the people who have been responsible for bringing you to this stage. Give back to your community. Ensure you imbibe the core value of stewardship – caring for others and the community.

He ended his address by quoting Heraclitus “No man ever steps in the same river twice. For it’s not the same river, and he’s not the same man.” He related the quote and explained that one’s life and career are like a flowing river, one cannot be static, and as a person, each of us will be changing with every experience, but one should ensure that the change is for the better. Use your experience for better and change for better.

The ceremony concluded with vote of thanks by Dr. Sharad Mhaiskar, Pro Vice Chancellor NMIMS University.

Mumbai, 20th Sept 2021: The international education space in India is evolving rapidly. In a step towards consolidating their global footprint, SVKM’s NMIMS, one of India’s leading education institutions with a 40-year legacy of academic excellence, has now launched its Centre for International Studies. This centre, also known as CIS, was formerly known as SVKM’s Institute of International Studies. It has a successful legacy of over 15 years in the domain of international education.
Established in 2006 as “SVKM’s Institute of International Studies”, the Centre for International Studies (CIS) had its first international collaboration with Kingston Business School, London, for its Business Administration Programme – BBA (Hons.). Over the years, CIS has created a niche for itself by providing a conducive learning environment, which is very important for the conduct of international degree programmes. At CIS, students receive quality education in state-of-the-art, well-equipped classrooms with new teaching techniques, and the latest e-learning environment of global standards like CANVAS, an edu-tech platform. A talent base of teaching faculty that is committed, enthusiastic and professionally accredited, encourage the students to develop and express their creative and competitive talents by participating in various extra-curricular activities and management festivals. The Centre also offers foreign language programmes and value-added certificate programmes in digital marketing, finance, luxury brand management and others, for the students’ holistic development. CIS, in its truest essence, is a “happy learning place”.
NMIMS Centre for International Studies, in association with Kingston University, London, offers the students the most premium 3-year degree of BBA (Hons.), which allows students to study two years at the CIS Campus in Mumbai, and the third year at Kingston University, London. All students transfer to Kingston University after the second year, and they are also eligible for the two-year post study work visa upon graduating. The students enrolled in this program have the chance to opt for a fourth year, where they undertake a one-year work placement.
Speaking about the recent development, Dr. Ramesh Bhat, Vice Chancellor, SVKM’s NMIMS University, said, “We want to provide a platform to NMIMS students to interact with their counterparts at a global level, which will encourage them to develop a diverse perspective and thus enrich their experiences.  Keeping the growing demand for international education in mind, the NMIMS Centre for International Studies was conceived as a premier centre for creating excellent avenues for international learning opportunities. I firmly believe that this step is in accord with NMIMS’ vision to be a globally admired University by 2030.”
