Mumbai : 8 Sept, 2020

SVKM’s NMIMS is very happy and proud to share that, Sarla Anil Modi School of Economics (SAMSOE) has got a recommendation from the Shri. Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas: Steel, Govt. of India for the Economic Justice Conclave SAMSOE had organized in the month of Jan 2020.

As a part of Economics  festival ‘Ka-Ching’ besides various competitive events school had introduced the Economic Justice Conclave( EJCON) on the topic “Combating the Existential Threats of Climate Change in India – A pathway toward sustainable development”. It was a National Policy Challenge, wherein students from all over the country  competed and come up with a joint student driven policy solution on climate change. Across the 3 days of the conclave from 27 to 29 January, panel discussions, debates and town hall sessions were held wherein the youth got a chance to learn from the knowledge and experience of eminent personalities and leaders. SAMSOE had overwhelming response where students had applied not only from several states in India but also from UK.

Today, the school has received this commendation from the Union Minister himself. This year too SAMSOE is preparing for Ka-Ching and EJCON with a theme on inequality and school is also starting with a series of webinars on related topics.

SVKM’s NMIMS congratulates Prof. Amita Vaidya, Director (SAMSOE) and her faculty/staff/students members for this commendable recommendation from Govt. of India!

Mumbai, 7 March 2020:

In our rapidly evolving world, it’s important to understand the immense role of Economics and how it has the power to shape lives across nations for the modern day humanity to flourish. It’s with this intent of exchange of ideas in Economics that the ‘4th Annual Economics Conference’ was organized by ‘Sarla Anil Modi School of Economics in collaboration with Indian Econometric Society.’

The theme of this stimulating event was ‘Sustainability, Equity & Development ‘and how by applying these principles can a society find workable ways to move ahead and progress. The event was attended by eminent researchers and participants who share a common joy of decoding Economics to create an equal society.

Prof. Amita Vaidya – Director, Sarla Anil Modi School of Economics, (SAMSOE) explained in simple terms that sustainable development in theory encompasses efforts to combine economic growth, environmental protection and social equity. She also shared that development is not only about economic growth and it should always be people-centric and our choices should impact the society in a positive way for the generations to come.

Dr. Subhajyoti Ray – Pro Vice Chancellor, (SVKM’s NMIMS) shared that the problem of inequality is very much visible in the Indian context on a day-to-day basis wherein few people have access to all the resources. In the context of technology and human productivity, the gap was widening which was leading to a huge equity challenge. He summed it up by adding that we need to be careful while borrowing from nature and this is where our value system can help us.

Dr. Leandro M De Magalhaes – Member of the Department of Economics, (University of Bristol, U.K) made it clear that social insurance sector needs to be supported on all fronts. His highly valued data, observations and arguments based on Malawi, a south-eastern landlocked African nation gave crucial insights on the influence of data in shaping policies. He also shared that the process of macroeconomics was highly desirable since it focuses on a wide range of data and parameters required to develop a cohesive idea.

Dr. R. Ramakumar – Chairperson of the conference, NABARD & Chair Professor TISS, Mumbai) believes in the idea of ‘Alternative Perspective’ or ‘Heterodoxy in Thoughts’ which comprises wide school of thoughts from ‘Structuralist Economics’ to ‘Marxist Economics’. He emphasized that one should look at agriculture as a central figure of change. He also stressed the need to understand the distribution of surplus across classes. On a concluding note, he said that diverse discussions should be encouraged in classrooms and it’s the role of any great institution to create a space for varied thinking which leads to different traditions being explored to create a better society.

The conference was instrumental in adding a much needed dimension to understand the concepts of Economics better.

Mumbai :

SVKM’s NMIMS – Sarla Anil Modi School of Economics (SAMSOE) has initiated  a wonderful concept of  ‘Eminent Lecture Series’ from academic year 2019-2020. The idea behind the lecture series is to give the students and faculty, an opportunity to interact with eminent personalities from different walks of life and thereby provide students not only with different perspectives, but also with potential resources that they can apply in future courses.

First keynote speaker of this lecture series  was Dr. Subramanian Swamy, Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha who spoke on ‘GDP methodology and the 5 Trillion Economy’ on 26th Feb, 2020. Further SAMSOE students interacted with Dr. Swamy. His speech was so illuminating that it enthralled the entire auditorium. The talk was befitting his larger than life stature as an economist / statesman par excellence.

Dr. Rajan Saxena, Vice Chancellor SVKM’s NMIMS welcomed Dr. Swamy and had given an introduction on origin of the School and its laurels achieved in last 10 years.

Mr. Shalin Divatia, Honorary Joint Secretary, SVKM remembered Dr. Swamy’s slogan “Do you want Swami or Raja to represent?. ” during the general elections when he was 10 years old and further described his qualities with 5 pandavas.

Dr. Subramanian Swamy who is also a Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) to have such a scholarly figure in the midst was a lesson in itself as he answered, with poise, some of the oft asked and inquisitive questions on the state of Indian economy and how to make it better.

The clarity and clairvoyance pertaining to Economics and its discourse was evident right from the word go as Dr. Swamy shared intelligent insights on how the world is shaping up and how India can seize the opportunity to pursue a path of relentless growth. On the subject of the $5 trillion economy, Dr. Swamy enlightened the audience by saying that if a major portion of GDP was allocated for education & higher education expenditure, then the goal can be attainable and the progress would be holistic in nature. During the session, he minced no words when claiming that only by cutting taxes will more money land up in people’s pockets which would in turn incentivize them to spend more thereby causing an increase in demand and an uptick in the employment rate. These factors would surely contribute to an increase in GDP percentage and raise the investors’ confidence and market sentiments to create more jobs.

This methodology when implemented from a ground level across industries has the dynamic potential to drive the economy like nothing else and the whole nation will start moving in the right direction said Dr. Swamy. He shared that one should always believe in the principles of Macroeconomics and look at the larger picture and not micromanage it. He added that there is no dearth of talent in the country and it’s only the lack of motivation which results in brain drain and by creating the right platform for these ignited minds, will Indian be a meritorious nation. On a concluding note, Dr. Swamy in his witty way said ‘Do not be pessimistic about India; have hope and everything will be all right.’

The loud applause and enlightened minds were the perfect outcome of a truly enriching and cohesive observation on Economics.

A vote of thanks was given by Prof. Amita Vaidya, Director (SAMSOE) to everyone who has been part of organizing the function including the people gathered to attend the function.
