Research centre to foster industry-academia collaboration to develop AI-driven solutions in manufacturing
Mumbai, 6 February 2021: SVKM’s NMIMS, a globally reputed university with over four decades of academic legacy in India, has signed an MoU with LivNSense Technologies, a pioneering Industrial IoT & AI platform, to jointly create the AI Center of Excellence & Research, that will help develop AI-driven manufacturing solutions and foster a culture of innovation and collaboration.
The centre of excellence will be the first of its kind in India and will help to boost the country’s manufacturing sector by making it more tech-driven (under make in India initiative) and less dependent on imported technology. According to a recent PwC report, the adoption of artificial intelligence was the highest in India during the COVID-19 pandemic, as compared to major economies, with over 70 per cent of Indian organisations having implemented AI in some form or the other. With the pandemic also having permanently altered the way businesses function in the future, adoption of technologies, including AI, will continue to increase, and will consequently drive demand for professionals skilled in the domain. The joint AI Center of Excellence & Research built by NMIMS in collaboration with LivNSense, will aid in India’s push to develop AI-oriented solutions for the manufacturing industry, as well as facilitate the creation of a knowledgeable, skilled workforce.
Speaking about this collaboration, Dr. Sharad Mhaiskar, Pro Vice Chancellor, SVKM’s NMIMS Deemed to be University, said, “We at NMIMS have always believed in robust collaboration between industry and academia, to drive effective solutions to industry issues. Keeping this emerging field in mind, we at NMIMS, could foresee and start programs in these futuristic areas, more than some 6 to 7 years back and became one of the academic leaders in India in these areas. The creation of this centre of excellence and research with LivNSense is particularly thrilling, as it will allow our students to sharpen their skills by working on live projects and attain real-world experience, which will, in turn, help them add value and thrive in the cutting-edge field of cognitive manufacturing.”
Mr. Avnish Kumar, CEO of LivNSense, further added, “We are thrilled to enter into this association with NMIMS. Together, I believe we can bridge the gap between industry and academics. Smarter manufacturing processes are the future of India’s manufacturing sector. Industries will be less error prone, more efficient, and more AI-oriented in the years to come. And this collaboration will ensure that students can learn everything there is to know about Industrial Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, etc.”
The primary objectives of this MoU are to help students gain valuable internship experience through LivNSense’s projects and industry expertise, create disruptive innovations, and develop tangible projects having exposure to real-world applications, solving industry problems in the AI and manufacturing space.
This virtual event was attended by NMIMS officials Dr. Sharad Mhaiskar – PVC, Dr. Meena Chintamaneni – Registrar, Dr. Alka Mahajan – Dean (Mukesh Patel School of Technology Management & Engineering), Prof. Sarada Samantaray – Associate Dean, Academics (Mukesh Patel School of Technology Management & Engineering), Dr. Siba Prasad Panda – Assistant Professor (Mukesh Patel School of Technology Management & Engineering), Mr. Manish Dalmia – Director (Marketing & PR).

Mumbai: SVKM’s NMIMS’ School of Business Management (SBM), recognised as one of India’s top management schools, invite applications for its MBA in Human Resource (HR), considered among the best in its category in the nation. Applications are open till 19th December, at the Mumbai campus. The carefully-designed curriculum is reviewed annually with inputs from industry, alumni and academia to equip students with competencies needed for the VUCA world.
This has ensured full placements during campus recruitments. The highly industry-oriented pedagogy combines rigorous academic coursework with workshops, guest sessions and field assignments.
With the economy expected to recover in the coming months, recruiters are looking for HR professionals with proficiency in cognitive skills like command over digital tools, critical thinking, adaptability, flexibility, with the emotional intelligence required for collaborations and team management. In the post-COVID economy, businesses will be looking for professionals who can help them transition from remote working to a more blended approach. The current placement trends indicate a high demand for HR professionals who can blend digital tools with a strategic approach while nurturing a collaborative approach.
Elaborating on the requirement of current HR leaders, Dr. Ramesh Bhat – officiating Vice Chancellor SVKM’s NMIMS, Provost and Dean, SBM said, “An HR leader fulfills a critical role in an organisation and is responsible for its most important resource, the human capital. Right now the business world needs leaders who can best utilise this resource and lead it through a rapidly changing work landscape. Our HR-MBA program has gained its reputation as the best in the country because of our dedication to guiding future leaders who can read the pulse of the people. Thanks to our comprehensive program, we are proud of our graduates who have gone on to become HR leaders in top companies across India and abroad.”
Launched in 2011, the aim of the program is to develop professionals with a strong grounding in the HR domain which is aligned with the overall business strategy. One of the distinguishing features of the MBA-HR is the multi-phased collaboration between academicians and the industry which extends from curriculum development, partnering for case writing to collaborations on capstone projects. The faculty is a mix of academicians with a strong background in research as well as HR professionals, industry experts, CHROs (Chief Human Resources Officers) and CEOs (Chief Executive Officers)
Speaking on the program Dr. Hema Bajaj, Program Chair (MBA-HR), School of Business Management, said, “What makes our MBA-HR highly relevant is the annual curriculum review we undertake. We did a comprehensive curriculum review (CCR ) of the program last year. The new course structure was developed in collaboration with multiple stakeholders and over multiple phases. The intense review process took place from June’19 to March’20,  with innumerable meetings with CHROs, CEOs, industry experts, entrepreneurs, alumni, and academicians. The modifications in the curriculum will further augment our students’ sociological, psychological, economic, and global outlook as they prepare to join the new workforce in a post-COVID economy.”
The curriculum includes 38 courses and 15 workshops spread over six trimesters. It focuses on building business acuity, harnessing technology for high impact organizations, developing research driven business solutions, and creating sociological, anthropological, psychological, economics and global outlook while keeping the changing nature of workforce and emergence of gig economy in mind. Apart from courses, such as Talent Management, Compensation Management and Emotional Intelligence the curriculum also includes courses and workshops on  People Analytics, Competency Mapping and Design Thinking. Applications are open for a dual degree MBA Decision Science program at SBM, under the aegis of SVKM’s NMIMS, in collaboration with Purdue University in the United States.

October 20, Mumbai: NMIMS School of Business Management (SBM) opened admissions to its very prestigious dual degree program – MBA in Decision Science & Analytics and MS in Business Analytics & Information Management (BAIM) in collaboration with Krannert School of Management, Purdue University, a leading public research university of USA. Admissions are open till December 14, 2020 for its Mumbai campus. With this degree, students will get an opportunity to study in two of the world’s most renowned institutions. The 2 year program is split into 3 terms at SBM and 2 terms at Krannert School of Management, followed by 1 term of internship in India under a faculty guide. The thoughtfully designed program follows a research-based and industry-focused pedagogy.

The dual degree program offers a unique opportunity to study dual, but complementary courses, management and decision science. In the third year of its launch, the program is addressing the current need for highly specialised skills in decision analysis, data sciences, and business analytics. The program fulfills the requirement for a multidisciplinary approach in management graduates. This carefully-designed curriculum is developed by SBM’s academic council in collaboration with Purdue University and industry leaders. At Krannert, Purdue University,  curriculum is focused on developing proficiencies in a variety of big data technologies and analytical techniques and prepares graduates for a business analytics career on a global stage. The experiential learning of the MBA program is aimed at improving application of learning through mind-set change in students while boosting their problem solving skills. The program includes intense industry and corporate involvement with capstone projects and 3 month spring internship at an industry partner firm.

Speaking on the course, Dr. Ramesh Bhat, Officiating Vice Chancellor, SVKM’s NMIMS, Provost and Dean School of Business Management said, “Recent studies suggest that we need a multidisciplinary approach for management students. In a multipolar world with a rising demand for technology-proficient workforce, managers can no longer afford to think unilaterally. With the current unpredictability in the global economy, we need managers who are trained in decision science and data handling. The field of decision sciences will see more than 2.7 million jobs in the coming year. Our dual program is designed to meet this rising demand for decision analysts in managerial positions.”

“Higher education is evolving rapidly and on a global scale,” says David Hummels, Dean of the Krannert School. “At Purdue we believe an important part of this evolution is great universities partnering to offer their students the best of what each has to offer. So we are thrilled by this opportunity to work with NMIMS to attract their excellent students into our elite MS program in Business Analytics and Information Management.”

Commenting on their partnership with Purdue University, Dr. Shailaja Rego, Associate Professor, Chairperson, MBA-DSA (NMIMS), further added, “Purdue University is known for its world-class research programs. Our association with Krannert School of Management opens up opportunities for our students to study in one of the world’s premier institutions. The 2 Term stint for MS BAIM will introduce them to cutting-edge developments in the field under the expert guidance of the best in the field, both from academia and the industry. This exposure will be critical in our multipolar and hyper-connected world. The program also lays heavy emphasis on application. Post their Purdue term, the students will complete an intensive 3 month spring internship program in India under faculty supervision.”

The compulsory spring internship carries 6 credit units. The internship acts as an essential training ground as well as a valuable opportunity for students to impress industry professionals. Students get to apply their classroom learning in the real world, gaining valuable first-hand experience. Most importantly, the internships have been a valuable ground for industry recruitments in the past few years. Chosen students are offered a Pre-Placement Offer or a Pre-Placement Interview. Career opportunities include data science jobs at new age industries in some of the most in-demand profiles. These include data analysis, data science, business intelligence, risk analysis, and digital integration management.

Eligibility: Since this is a dual degree program, applicants are required to qualify for both the NMIM SBM and Krannert School of Management, Purdue University. The rising score of Covid-19 across the world implies that no single organization can work in isolation in responding to the pandemic and its consequential impacts. Hence, governments must collaborate with a wide range of agencies, including NGOs and social enterprises to facilitate behavioural change and build social cohesiveness. In India NITI Aayog appealed to over 92,000 NGOs to assist the government in identifying Covid-19 hotspots and delivering services to vulnerable groups. Much before the appeal came in NGOs and social enterprises across India stepped up to complement the efforts of the Indian Government by shifting their focus from their primary activities to providing relief measures.
This shift coupled with COVID 19 crisis is likely to have an unintended impact on the functioning of developmental organizations in the near future. To examine this aspect the Jasani Centre of Social Entrepreneurship & Sustainability Management, NMIMS conducted an online study on ‘Impact of COVID19 on NGOs and Social Enterprises’.
The study was based on 30 NGOs, not for profit and for-profit social enterprises operating in Maharashtra. From this 43 % were from rural areas, 46 % from urban areas, and rest were operational in both urban and rural areas. The key priority areas of their interventions comprised of education, health, skill development, child welfare, economic empowerment of women, environmental conservation, rural & urban community development, and working with differently-abled.
Contributions Made
With the changed context of the COVID-19 pandemic, a little over 90 % of NGOs and social enterprises have pivoted rapidly to respond to different and additional needs of local communities. Around 67 % of organizations were able to mobilize resources to provide relief measures. Social enterprises like Green India Initiative Pvt Ltd, Unity Group, Ecoexist, Srujna Charitable Trust, The Aangan Trust, Renovate India, Need Vikas Sanstha, Mann, Child Health Foundation, CCDT and Childline provided groceries and sanitation kits to people staying on streets, daily wage earners and migrants. Around 50 % of organizations in the study were found to be engaged in taking care of the basic requirements of the vulnerable communities. Some NGOs collaborated with government and corporates to avoid duplication of service and ensured that the essentials reach the affected communities.
Besides the distribution of grocery, one-third of organizations were engaged in creating community awareness for personal hygiene, community sanitation, raising resources, providing important medical information to communities. For instance, Watawaran was engaged in disseminating information about the food distribution system and other schemes in simple languages in rural areas of Maharashtra.
Organizations working in education in rural Maharashtra like Shivaji Rao Deshmukh Group of Institutes provided masks and sanitizers to government staff. Life Supporters Institute of Health Sciences (LIHS) is engaged in supporting Ambulance operators with designing SOPs for handling COVID19 patients and sanitization of the ambulance after the call. Childline coordinators also assisted government authorities to provide tele-counseling to suspected patients quarantined at homes.
Impact
It is an undisputed fact that the development sector across the globe is facing a critical threat from the pandemic. But, in India as our NGOs and social enterprises lack contingency planning the impact would be felt more. 83% of organizations reported that due to COVID19 their organizations’ work has been significantly impacted. Executives reported that the lockdown has impacted their project operations and they are sure of having financial challenges ahead. The financial and operational risk burden has fallen disproportionately on the NGOs and social enterprises. The implications of this for cash flows are critical at this time. A little more than one-third of executives stated that managing costs of running the organization, payment of staff salaries, early closure of projects, scaling down projects, delays in starting new projects are some of the many problems which social sector organizations will have to face now. Some are contemplating reducing the staff size, but that would be catastrophic to the organization. As their capacity to respond to both the immediate as well as long term needs which are likely to escalate as a result of this pandemic will be impacted.
Akhandjyoti Eye Hospital’s health operations were severely impacted as patients were unable to reach the hospital. Remote counseling of cases of child abuse and domestic violence was a big challenge for organizations like Arpan and Child Aid Foundation. Srujna’s livelihood support activities have been severely impacted and increased the economic vulnerability of poor women. Another important concern expressed by for-profit social enterprises like Awaaj, Ecoexist enterprises, Green India Initiative Pvt Ltd is related to business continuity and gaining market access as the spending patterns would now significantly differ. By and large, executives expressed that they are worried about the safety of their staff to work in slums and high-risk areas. Hence, a few organizations are now engaged in devising their service delivery strategy.
The colossal economic downturn implies an impact on future aid assistance. More than 50 % of executives feared that they may experience a reduction in grant in aid support from the government as well as corporates due to funds getting diverted to COVID19 relief and rehabilitation activities. The economic crisis is expected to limit both capacity and availability of donors and investors. Development organizations will have to re-think and redesign their business model to diversify their income and create a sustained impact.
Expectations: Government
To enable NGOs and social enterprises to function effectively and address the challenges created by COVID19, respondents shared that there is a need for developing new ideas and innovative solutions in the area of health care, livelihood support, and provision of energy. These solutions can evolve through cross-sector collaboration between development organizations, government, and corporates. It was echoed by almost all respondents that governments at all levels can play a key role in promoting these partnerships.
Almost 80 % of the executives shared that governments should design an innovative financing model for NGOs and social enterprises. Proposed solutions include the provision of an anticipatory financing mechanism like the provision of soft loans to social enterprises to raise finance in advance to address immediate needs, establishing an NGO Liquidity Fund for enabling NGOs to cover overheads during critical periods and payback over a period of time. Additionally provision of tax relaxations and that of demand-led grant in aid support were recommended. As development organizations work in high-risk environments there is a need to design risk-sharing models so that they will not be forced to shoulder the burden of financial risk all by themselves; rather it should be shared with donors/investors equally well.
